风力发电机并网以后，控制系统根据风速的变化，通过桨距调节机构，改变桨叶攻角以调整输出电功率，更有效地利用风能。在额定风速以下时，此时叶片攻角在零度附近，可认为等同于定桨距风力发电机，发电机的输出功率随风速的变化而变化。当风速达到额定风速以上时，变桨距机构发挥作用，调整叶片的攻角，保证发电机的输出功率在允许的范围内。
变桨系统是风力发电机组的重要组成部分，主要功能是通过对叶片节距角的控制，实现大风能捕获以及恒速运行。变桨系统还是风力发电机组的主刹车系统，电动变桨系统可以使每个桨叶独立地调整角度。通常一个完整的交流或直流变桨系统主要包括3个电动机（包括刹车，编码器，温度传感器，冷却风扇等），3个带驱动器的轴控制柜以及3个备电源柜，以及相关的电缆和插头。所有这些部件都装在轮毂内。
目前，我国变浆系统产品主要依赖进口，代表性的有SSB、LUST、Mita、Bosch Rexroth等；国内主要有桂林星辰、连云港杰瑞、成都阜特有批量应用，和利时、天津瑞能相关产品也在进行测试中。
