The coating material in the upper part of the hydraulic section is pressurized and forced out of the pump. New or recirculated coating material is siphoned into the lower part of the hydraulic section. When the piston and plunger reach the top of the stroke, the shifter mechanism (1) moves the air valve spool (3) to the opposite side of the valve. The flow of supply air is rerouted to the top of the piston to begin the pressure stroke.
